Courses for Sure Start centres

Training > Sure Start

Sure Start centres play a vital role in ensuring our children get a good start in life. Disabled children in particular face a difficult future, so it is important that they are dealt with in the best possible way in their very first educational experience.

The Equality Act covers children in all educational settings, including Sure Start centres. In addition, Sure Start centres, as public bodies, are obliged to follow the Disability Equality Duty.

Manchester Local Authority has contracted Inclusive Choice Consultancy to train all staff in their Sure Start centres in the EA over 2010 and 2011, and also to train all senior centre staff in the DED.

Inclusive Choice would be happy to discuss your local authority's requirements in these areas also.

Our Sure Start training courses

This course trains Sure Start centre staff in their duties under the Equality Act (EA) to disabled children in their care. It is suitable for all centre staff, from heads of centres to occasional staff.

Many case studies throughout the course show examples of situations that could occur in your centre, and how you should handle these within the EA. Videos show examples of good practice in including disabled children in nurseries.

This course trains senior centre staff in the requirements of the Disability Equality Duty and preparing your plans and information to be published.

The extensive handbook provided with the course offers many great ideas that you can implement in your centre, guidance on involving disabled people, example disclosure letters, example questionnaires, tips on writing a questionnaire, guidance on data protection, and many other resources to help you.
